Backing up your company’s data is essential, so you don’t lose vital information. Having a recovery plan is also necessary as by simply having copies of your data doesn’t mean your business can keep running.

A fire broke out in OVHcloud’s server farm campus in France earlier this week which has led to the destruction of one of its datacentres, SBG2 and some damage to another, SBG1. Since the whole site is being isolated, this has affected other servers hosted in all four of the campus’s datacentres which include both SBG3 and SBG4. This led to websites falling offline across Europe[1].

As the data held in those datacentres is said to not be recoverable, it highlights the importance of keeping regular backups and having multiple backups to ensure your data is safe. One of the best protections plans to safeguard your data is the 3-2-1 rule, this states that your company should have at least 3 copies of your data, store 2 of them on different storage medias on site, with 1 of them being offsite.

Having many backups stored across different medias and in different locations will greatly minimise the chances of your data being lost or becoming corrupt. An onsite backup means a quick way to be able to access your data should anything happen to your primary data.

Furthermore, a recovery plan is needed in case of the original data becoming inaccessible and you need to access it again. This can be implemented by using “Disaster Recovery as a Service” where a third party can provide tools to manage the recovery process[2].

This situation is a reminder to back up your data, make sure you have several copies and have a plan to be able to access your data.
